Inspiration Generation – The Movie!

We are pleased to be able to bring you the movie of the Inspiration Generation concert which took place at Dawlish Community College last Friday.

This took place before an enthusiastic audience of pupils, parents and invited guests, including Peter from the Summercourt Residential Home in Teignmouth home whose memories provided the inspiration for the first movement.

The musicians were year 9 students from Dawlish Community College, together with pupils from Oaklands Park School and Westcliff, Gatehouse, Kenn, Kenton and Exminster Primary Schools.

There are 3 movements,

1 Peter: includes musical motifs based on the man and his words. ‘Peter’, ‘Corduroy trousers and cardigan’, ‘Learn to Laugh’, ‘Make the most of it’, ‘Don’t chew the Pen!’ . The minor key section features sound beam music created by the students from Oaklands Park special school.

2 Ruth: Ruth is hard of hearing and a great fan of Vera Lyn’s songs. This movement begins with wartime speeches, musical sounds mimicking tinnitus and confused hearing and then develops into a theme based on the song ‘Yours’, Ruth’s favourite Vera Lynn number!

3 Street Party: A piece evoking themes of celebration and collective relief following VE day. It has an uplifting 5/8 time signature and contains lyrics written by Mia and Shola, who also sang .

Henrietta Coxon, Manager of Summercourt has worked very closely with us (thanks for the photos Henrietta!) and after the concert said,

“Peter has refused to leave his room for about 2 years, and yet having been winkled out of his chair on Friday for the first time in 2 years, he had the most fantastic time, and was terrifically proud that he had had some input into your project. This was a really important day for him. Ruth was devastated not to be there, but she is really looking forward to seeing the DVD.

I do hope that we can continue to have this kind of link with the school – it is so good for both the children and our elderly people. We are looking forward to showing the movie to all of the residents”.

Our musicians were wonderfully directed and encouraged by Jon Waterworth, Head of Music at Dawlish Community College, together with Lead Animateur Jason Thornton and Animateurs Charlie Groves, David Quigley and Clair Packer. They were also extremely well supported by trainee Animateurs from Bath Spa University, Claire Packer, Anna Kearns and Jonathan Clarke.

The musicians were of course fantastic, we are very grateful to all of them for their commitment and enthusiasm.
